Science at Shield Road Primary School
Curriculum Intent
At Shield Road Primary School, we believe that high-quality teaching of Science provides pupils with the key knowledge and understanding of concepts that they need in order to understand the world around them through the various disciplines of Science. Children will develop the key scientific enquiry skills that they need in order to question, test, analyse, predict and explain. The science curriculum will inspire and excite children and encourage them to be curious about natural phenomena.
At Shield Road Primary School, we believe these principles underpin good teaching and learning in the Science curriculum:
- Teachers have secure subject knowledge and plan interesting lessons with a keen eye to the statutory curriculum content and scientific enquiry skills.
- Children are involved in practical activities using a range of enquiry types throughout a unit of work.
- Teachers and children enjoy and are enthusiastic about Science.
- Full use is made of the outside area.
- Educational visits, workshops and STEM activities are planned into the Science curriculum in order to embed and develop an enthusiasm for science learning.
- Teachers actively teach and display the scientific vocabulary for each unit of work so that children are confident in their understanding and use.
- Formative and summative assessments are made in order to inform planning and ensure children are secure in their knowledge and understanding of concepts in order to move to their next stage of learning.
- Teachers seek to develop cross curricular links and encourage children to use their skills from other curriculum areas, particularly the use of English, Mathematics and Computing skills.

School Year 2020/2021 the mixed 4/5 classes will follow the year 5 curriculum. School Year 2021/2022 the mixed 5/6 classes will follow the year 6 curriculum
Curriculum Impact
- The majority of children will achieve age related expectations in Science at the end of their cohort year.
- Children will retain knowledge that is pertinent to Science with a real life context.
- Children will be able to question ideas and reflect on knowledge.
- Children will work collaboratively and practically to investigate and experiment.
- Children will be able to explain the process they have taken and be able to reason scientifically.
How we assess children
- Formative assessment of Science is undertaken throughout Science lessons and activities by teachers observing and having discussions with children about their learning. This form of assessment is particularly useful in assessing Working Scientifically skills.
- Teachers also undertake formative assessment when they are marking children’s books.
- Science End of unit tests/quizzes are used to assess children’s knowledge of content at the end of each science unit of work.
- Teachers may use a Focussed assessment task which is designed to assess a specific Working Scientifically skill if they require more information about a particular skill.
- Exemplification materials are used in order to inform teacher’s judgements.
- Interim frameworks are used in Year 2 and Year 6 in order to assess whether children have met their age related expectations.
