Physical Education

Intent, Implementation and Impact

“A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. It should provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.” The National Curriculum

Intent

At Shield Road we recognise the role that Physical Education plays in promoting a healthy balanced lifestyle and establishing healthy habits for our children that they can take with them into the future. We intend to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities that inspire all children to succeed in physical education and in developing life skills. We want to teach children skills to keep them safe such as being able to swim.  We provide opportunities for the children to compete in sports and other activities that build character and help to embed the values such as fairness, resilience, teamwork and respect.  Our curriculum aims to improve the wellbeing and fitness of all children at Shield Road, not only through the sporting skills taught, but through the underpinning values and disciplines that PE promotes.

Implementation

PE at Shield Road provides challenging and enjoyable learning through a range of sporting activities including invasion games, ball games, strike and field games, gymnastics, dance, swimming and outdoor & adventure. The curriculum has been designed in partnership with Signature Sports. We try to expose the children to as many different sports and activities as we can so that they can find something that they enjoy and can pursue.

The long term plan sets out the PE units which are to be taught throughout the year and ensures that the requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met. Children are invited to attend competitive sporting events within the local area. They have opportunity to attend football tournaments, cross country, swimming galas and cricket tournaments. These events and our in-school activities such as those run by Pride in Play develop teamwork and leadership skills and are very much enjoyed by the children.

Each year the children participate in an active week which allows children to experience new sports and activities such as cricket and orienteering. This is an opportunity for children to develop new skills, improve their fitness and find something new they enjoy.

Impact

We measure impact by the use of lesson observations, pupil voice and assessment. Teachers and our Sport Coaches assess children’s learning throughout each PE lesson to ensure understanding of skills before moving onto the next skill or lesson. We use all of this evidence to plan next steps both during the year and for the coming year. We also use the evidence to plan how to use our Sports Funding for the next academic year.

Through teaching a wide range of activities and sports our evidence has shown that the children are beginning to understand the benefits of exercise on both physical and mental health, have improved fitness levels and have  a positive and engaged attitude towards PE / physical activity.
