Music

At Shield Road, our music curriculum intends to inspire creativity and self-expression and encourages our children on their musical journeys.   As well as teaching a progressive musical programme, we also offer a broad programme of enrichment from weekly singing assemblies and performing in musical productions. The EYFS and KS1 put on a Nativity and Year 6 put on a performance in the Summer. Our children have performed at a local care home and taken part in a Bristol wide singing scheme. Many children also take up the opportunity to work with take part in group guitar lessons.

We aim to provide a wide variety of opportunities and experiences that inspire and engage children to develop a love of music throughout their time at Shield Road and beyond. This will help to develop self-confidence, creativity and a sense of achievement. Throughout their time here, children will develop skills such as composition and how to listen to music critically, as well as practical skills.

Our music curriculum is built around the Charanga music programme and, through this, the children develop their understanding, express themselves physically, emotionally and make musical judgements. Then they will apply their new learning and create their own musical ideas.

Statement of intent:

Children at Shield Road see themselves as musicians through making inspiring music at a whole school, class and individual level.
