Shield Road Primary School

Headteacher's Welcome

Shield Road School is situated in Filton on Shields Avenue. The school has around 196 pupils, most of whom live in the local area. The school offers a very good environment in which to learn. As well as classrooms which have been recently refurbished and equipped with interactive white boards, we have a cookery room, recently updated ICT suite, music room and a well stocked library. The school buildings are in good repair (extensive refurbishment and structural work was completed in Spring 2005) and the grounds are attractively kept.

The school has long-standing links with a local church which has a positive impact on the school's ethos and on our pupils’ spiritual development.

We have a ‘Schools for Health Award’ and practice includes a range of opportunities to take part in sports and classes having their own vegetable patches. Our pupils’ attitude towards their learning and the contribution they make to school life generally are a strength of the school. Visitors to the school frequently comment on their politeness and readiness to help out.  From working as play-leaders and school buddies to running charity events and starting their own dance groups, our pupils are constantly exceeding everyone’s expectations.

The school is able to offer extended services to parents and pupils. Bluebells playgroup moved onto the site in September 2005 and the Owl 'After School' Club already share the site. These, combined with the breakfast club, mean we can now offer a service from 8.15am to 5.30pm. A number of lettings and outside clubs provide extra-curricular activities on the school site and we work closely with community services to provide a range of courses for parents in our newly created community room.

In and around Filton are the regional centres of many multi-national businesses. We have recently been building better links with them and in this next year hope to start up a reading partner scheme and a number partner scheme.
